Rib House 1.0

Barkitecture Competition, Austin, Texas (2010)

Barkitecture is an annual event that takes place in Austin's 2nd Street District benefitting local animal rescue organizations and our design was featured in a story about the event. See the short video here. The event is a silent auction where invited designers have the opportunity to craft and build a sustainable contemporary dog house. As dog owners, we understand the importance of a playful and durable shelter. This all wood construction is derived from the abstraction of a beloved dog treat: the RIB. Equally spaced, the series of ribs create a screen for enclosure and comfortable airflow. The ribbon-like envelope flows from top to bottom and can be enjoyed both by the owner as an end table, as well as the lower extension to place food and water bowls on.  RIB HOUSE illustrates our architecture studio's interest in transforming the design process through digital technology. Our design intentionally optimizes the use of materials and through playful invention –three mundane sheets of wood are transformed into a crafted contemporary canine dwelling suitable as a signature indoor-outdoor furniture piece.
