Inukshuk House

As a modern home design, the Inukshuk House is squarely focused on a sense of place.

Inukshuk is Inuit for "in the image of man" and were large stone sculptures used as a signal or marker on the shore for fisherman in orienting themselves to their villages. The residence maximizes views to natural features and gives reason for its existence as a living destination. The contemporary forms are softened by careful use of natural materials allowing the building to be both sculpture and canvas for the inhabitants, their furnishings and their activities.

Central to the plan is a tower stylized as lighthouse in the image of man. This community room is both dining, studio and library, allowing for a variety of activities as well as a link to the exterior. Sustainable strategies include rainwater collection, grey water options and energy efficient systems allowing this building to be rooted to place but resting lightly on the land.

Design is a process of collaboration, As Architects in Austin our method involves a reliance on dialogue and a commitment to sustainable and green solutions as well as a committment to the community. Notice in the kitchen there is a modern furniture design for a doghouse...Ribhouse 1.0 was designed and built by our studio for Barkitecture, an annual chairty event in Austin, Texas benefitting local animal rescues.
