Sukkah City

Sukkah City Competition, New York, NY (2010)

This project was conceived as a symbolic assemblage of natural elements within a traditional framework. The four elements act as an additional organizing principle chosen as a complement to the principles of the traditional SUKKAH, also present in the composition. Symbolically, the three walls represent fire and water (red and blue cork woven through a vertical bamboo lattice)and air represented by sand blasted Plexiglass panels affixed to an interpreted balloon framed wood wall -- wind through the trees.  Additionally, the stone circle as a floor grounds the composition and provides the visitor both a tactile and auditory connection to this place. The four structural posts are seen as the four species: the mouth, heart, spine and eye and the seven cork ribbons are representative of the shepherds. The overhead condition of torqued bamboo allows for an extension of the space and a connection to the stars above. The composition explores the tradition through interpretation of natural elements with a buildable form and a sense of place.
