Department Of Homeland Security Customs And Border Patrol, Mcallen, Texas (2008-2009) *LEED NC Silver 2010
Jamie Crawley, AIA, LEED AP | Lead Designer, Project Manager
This customs and border patrol facility in McAllen, Texas is one of the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) certified government facilities in the area. The project design vision successfully integrated the strength, dignity and stability of the U.S. Government—while reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Rio Grande Valley.
The facility’s design incorporated green techniques specifically aimed at minimizing the impact of the extreme solar heat prevalent in the South Texas environment. The 60,000+ square foot facility houses an emergency operation center, processing and detention operations, as well as new offices and training areas, including a gymnasium and locker rooms for 300 Border Patrol agents. The site improvements include over 500,000 square feet of agent and staff parking, with covered parking to protect 800 Border Patrol vehicles. The project also includes a 17-bay vehicle maintenance building, a fueling station, and car wash facilities on site. Security provisions include intrusion detection, blast-resistant windows, and specially-designed HVAC systems to protect against airborne pathogens.
The design included an extensive interior and exterior sign package for way-finding as well as a green education program for agents and visitors to the facility. The fast-track project was completed one month ahead of schedule and on budget and is the largest station in the United States.
